Much is made of Trump’s use of Twitter, mostly from those who believe the tweets are caustic. Even Trump’s advisers want him to stop. But historians think otherwise. The tweets, they argue, are as close as we will get to a presidential diary and, therefore, these outbursts in 140-characters or less are key historical records.

It is, presidential historian Robert Dallek told me, “a kind of presidential diary.”

“A kind of live diary,” Princeton University political scientist Julian Zelizer said.

“His version of a diary,” said Douglas Brinkley, editor of The Reagan Diaries.
